Product Review: Covergirl Full Spectrum Matte Ambition Primer & Powder Foundation

on

Is it just me or has it been a minute since a bunch of new makeup launches have happened? There hasn’t been many exciting new launches recently, except for the Jaclyn Cosmetics lipstick launch which we all know how that one went. Luckily, some tried-and-true drugstore brands are releasing some new products for Summer, including Covergirl’s new Full Spectrum range. It’s an inclusive range of primers, foundations, powders, concealers, palettes and more to fit a wide variety of skin tones. I’m a fan of inclusivity so kudos to Covergirl for making that a mission. As much as I wanted to get my hands on each product type from the Full Spectrum range, I decided to go with the Full Spectrum Matte Ambition Primer and the Full Spectrum Matte Ambition Powder Foundation – two makeup items I use everyday. Let’s dive into all the details about the new primer and powder foundation from Covergirl!

Some people are of the belief that primer is pointless. To be honest, I can see that point but regardless, I still use primer on most days. It’s nice to have a layer of something between my skin and my foundation. And if it helps mattify, even better! The Covergirl Matte Ambition Primer is a primer that is a lotion-type primer (not silicone feeling), claims to help mattify the skin and keep oils at bay, and also has 20 SPF. First things first, this primer doesn’t do much for me on the side of mattifying. I find my method of keeping my skin oil-free with powder and setting spray works better than just this primer alone. With that being said, it might be perfect for someone with drier skin than me. I love that it has SPF in it because let’s be honest, we don’t all put on SPF during our morning skin routines. It makes it easy to protect your skin and a bonus, it doesn’t have flashback in flask photography.

I’m fairly used to a silicone primer, but this one feels much more lotion like. However because it’s a lotion-like primer, I feel like it soaks into the skin more. I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing, but it might be problematic for those of you with blemish-prone or sensitive skin. Overall, I think it’s a good primer, but not great. I’d recommend this primer more so for people with dry skin that want an SPF in their makeup routine.

With my oily/combo skin, powders are a must in my makeup routine. You will not find me leaving the house without my concealer perfectly set with powder. The things I look for in a powder are light coverage, finely milled so that way I can use a beauty sponge to apply it, and it needs to be mattifying.

The first time I opened the Covergirl Matte Ambition Powder, I went on my merry way and rubbed my Ecotools beauty sponge in the pan to pick up product. I quickly realized that this powder is not finely milled enough to use a sponge. It will get cakey in the pan and even if you can get some on the sponge, it won’t apply evenly. Although that’s a disappointment in my opinion, I continued to use this powder and test it by applying it with a brush. When applied with a brush, this powder is great. It gives me decent coverage and can keeps me fairly matte throughout the day. It would likely keep me more matte if I could apply it with a sponge, but that’s okay.

Overall, it’s not a bad powder at all. I will say, I prefer the Covergirl Trublend powders more. They are more finely milled and apply with a sponge effortlessly. But, if you aren’t the type to use a sponge for powder, I think it’s a great, wearable powder foundation.
