Product Review: L’Oreal Air Volume Mega Mascara

on

If you’re the type that likes to test out the latest, greatest makeup releases, my guess is that you love to test out new mascaras. If so, I’m right there with you. Mascara is one of those items that brands come out with constantly and trying new ones means you can find some new holy grail options. My personal holy grail mascara is the L’Oreal Lash Paradise. And I love the L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara for my bottom lashes, too. So in general when L’Oreal releases a new mascara, I’m always willing to give it a try. L’Oreal’s latest mascara release is the Air Volume Mega Mascara, which promises a lightweight feel and ample volume with its air-whipped, easy-to-wash-off texture. Does it live up to those claims? Let’s dive in!

Let’s begin with the wand, because every mascara lover knows that the wand can make or break the product and experience. The wand is natural bristled, fluffy, and has a rounded tip with even spacing between the bristles. I prefer natural-bristle wands much more than plastic bristles. I feel like they give an overall better, even coating of product and this brush does exactly that. The spacing between the bristles is just wide enough to fully encompass each lash hair with product but also comb them slightly to give a perfectly even coat from base to end. The rounded tip is nice for more precise applications on the very inner or outer lashes however, it does tend to hold more product than within the longer bristles. The only negative is that because the wand is so fluffy and wide, it can be a little difficult to cleanly apply the product to lower lashes. For lower lashes, I still prefer the L’Oreal Telescopic since the brush is much smaller and thinner.

As for the product itself, it is a deep rich color and lasts all day. I find that there is some flaking with the initial application and minimal flaking throughout the day. However, it does a good job of making the lashes look longer and definitely more voluminous and lifted. One thing to mention is that it can get a little clumpy if you apply to much or try to do more than 2 coats. I like a little clump, but not too much. This can be too much if you don’t have a lighter hand.

From the claims of it feeling lighter than other mascaras, that’s hard to tell. I can’t say that my L’Oreal Lash Paradise feels more “heavy” compared to the Air Volume Mega Mascara. I know there are some heavier feeling mascaras out there, so this might make a bigger difference if you use a mascara with a heavier formula. The claims of it being easy to wash off are definitely true. I don’t find myself rubbing my eyes quite as much with my cleansing balm when I use the L’Oreal Air Volume mascara. I definitely like that aspect of this mascara.

Lastly for the price, I’ve seen this product for as little as $10 and up to $14. Compared to other great mascaras at the drugstore, that price is right in line with those. Most L’Oreal mascaras are right around that price point and I do think this is worth the price. I’m a firm believer that you don’t need to buy high-end mascaras to get a great look and this mascara proves that.

Left shows after 2 coats. Right shows no mascara.

My overall opinion? It’s a good, solid mascara. Would I choose this over my Lash Paradise every time? No. But it’s a great choice that I do find myself reaching for on a regular basis. If you’re looking for a voluminous, lightweight, washable mascara at a reasonable price point, this is a great option.
